I expect it comes from the time of grave robbing, a nailed down lid is a better deterent - then again, if you go to all the trouble of digging six foot I'm sure a few nails wouldn't hurt... hmm. Maybe its just one of those mysteries in life.
Perhaps in case the night of the living dead, becomes a reality.
