Is it possible to trim a dog's nails to short for the show ring?

I am not talking so short that you cut the quick. As you trim a dogs nail down, the quick naturally recedes.





To keep a tidy appearance, and the illusion of a ';tight'; foot, show dogs often have much shorter nails than their pet counterparts.

No, I don't think so. I use to own and show a doberman and his nails had to be nubs....I mean...just little nubs...it was hard to keep the nail that short and it wasn't too short.Is it possible to trim a dog's nails to short for the show ring?
No, but make sure not to cut to the quick, a wounded dog in the ring will be excused from the class....have seen it.....blood on rear toenail and judge excused the lady, said the dog needed to be cared for, and she did not get to show him....so be careful, nothing says can be too short, but you do not want blood or an injured dog in the ring...

Not really. I have seen dog nails like half a inch in the ring %26amp; in real world. The only thing I can think of would be digging would be more difficult. Most indoor dogs learn to not bear down on their nails so they don't get caught in the carpet, furniture etc. which why their nails tend to be long.
The only time it would be a problem is if the nail is cut to where the quick is cut severely. This becomes a problem because it does hurt the dog, and they may or may not walk straight.


Otherwise, nails do not make a difference in the ring.

No i dont think so. Its more detrimental to have a longer nail on a dog then a shorter one.
